The Gryphon men's basketball team dropped a 80-53 final to the visiting Ottawa Gee Gees on Saturday night at the W.F. Mitchell Centre. The Gryphons drop to 0-2 on the season.
After last night's disappointing last second defeat to the Carleton Ravens, the Gryphons were looking to avenge their season opening loss. The Ottawa Gee Gee's had other ideas.
Josh Gibson-Bascombe had a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists, while Warren Ward also netted 18 as the Gee Gees cruised to the victory. Mathieu Riendeau added 17 points off the bench.
The Gryphons couldn't muster the same effort, as Jay Mott (Burlington, Ont.) was the only player to break double figures with 12 points before being fouled out early in the third period. Nick Walters chipped in with eight off the bench.
The Gee Gee defence was too much for the Gryphons to handle, causing 24 Guelph turnovers. With all the turnovers, the Gee Gees were able to capitalize with multiple fast break scores.
Guelph was unable to match their usual three-point success, hitting only two three-pointers the entire game. Things didn't get much better when Mott was called for a foul early in the third quarter, his fourth, and then given a technical after arguing the call. With Mott fouled out, the Gryphons top three-point threat was missing.
With a number of key members missing from the Guelph squad, the Gee Gee's used their height advantage to outmuscle the Gryphons. With 6'5 Gibson-Bascombe at point guard, the Guelph backcourt just couldn't matchup properly.
Gryphon head coach Chris O'Rourke attempted to use his whole line-up to disrupt the Gee Gee offence, but Ottawa was able to stay in control throughout the game. The Gryphons left far too many points at the free throw line, hitting only 50% of their freebees.
With the loss, the Gryphons fall to 0-2 to start their regular season. Guelph goes at it again against York November 13
th at 8pm.
