MORGANNE LINTHWAITE, WOMEN’S RUGBY
Morganne Linthwaite (Guelph, Ont.) was named the Championship MVP as the Guelph Gryphon women’s rugby team captured the CIS Championship title on Sunday. The Gryphons defeated the reigning national champs, the St. Francis Xavier X-Women 28-0 in the gold medal final of the championships hosted by Trent at the Justin Chiu Stadium in Peterborough. The fourth year lock’s commitment and courage on defence was instrumental towards the Gryphons keeping the X-Women off the scoreboard. After Guelph's first try, StFX was granted a penalty on the Gryphon five-metre line, Linthwaite flew into their biggest runner, knocking the ball out of her hands stopping all momentum. From this point forward, the Gryphons controlled the game, driving down the field time and again for 21 more unanswered points. Linthwaite did an exceptional amount of work around the field in each of the Gryphons three-tournament games. She was a threat every time she had the ball in her hands and punished people in defence.
