The Gryphons are the No. 1-ranked team in the country and sit in 1st place in the OUA standings. Fourth year forward Averi Nooren is a big reason why. The Aylmer, Ontario native earned Gryphon Athlete of the Week honours after scoring two goals in as many games this past week against a pair of tough opponents in Waterloo and Western. On Thursday night against the Warriors, Nooren helped the Gryphons get off to a fast start by scoring in the opening period to give the Gryphons a 2-0 lead (they would go on to win 3-2). On Saturday in London, Averi was at it again, this time ripping a shot off the cross bar and in to tie the game at 1-1 in the final period. Guelph would go on to lose to the defending national champion Mustangs in a shootout, but Nooren had once again made a huge impact on the game. Her goal against the Mustangs also extended her point streak to seven games. For the season, Averi currently is the OUA's leading scorer (9 goals, 6 assists in 13 games played). Her 9 goals scored are also tops in the country, as she is tied for the CIS lead alongside Emma Waldenberger from Regina.
