This past weekend, for the first time in program history, the Gryphons Women's Hockey team took the ice as the top ranked team in the country. With a pair of tough road games ahead of them in both Thunder Bay (versus Nipissing) and Sudbury (versus Laurentian), the Gryphons dug deep and found a way to pull out a pair of overtime wins. Safe to say, they would not have been able to do so without some incredible performances from their team co-captain and fifth year star Leigh Shilton.
On Saturday afternoon in Thunder Bay, Shilton got the Gryphons off to a great start with her third goal of the season. The Gryphons would go on to win the game 3-2 in OT, with Shilton on the ice for all three goals. On Sunday afternoon, the Gryphons once again earned a 3-2 OT victory, this time over Laurentian. This time, not only was Shilton on the ice for all three Gryphon goals, she would score twice including the OT winner. The Belleville native now has five goals on the season with three coming over the weekend. Thanks in large part to her performance in those two games, the Gryphons now return to home ice with their No. 1 ranking intact. The Gryphons will next be in action on Thursday night when they host the Waterloo Warriors in a matchup of two of the top three teams in the OUA standings. Puck drop is set for 7:30pm at the Gryphon Centre.
