The 10th annual York University Christmas Open was held on Saturday (Dec. 5) at the Toronto Track and Field Centre. The Guelph Gryphon track and field team put on a strong showing.
Leading the women’s team was fourth year Sarah Peirce (Aurora, Ont.) who ran the fastest 60 metre time in the country with a time of 7.60. Her time automatically qualifies her for the CIS Championships. Her performance equaled her life time best and ranks her second all-time in Gryphon history.
Meanwhile leading the Gryphons on the men’s side was Cornell Haynes who jumped 2.05 metres in the high jump to win the competition by over 20 centimetres. Cornell's jump also ranks him first in the country and automatically qualified him for the CIS Championships. A 2007 CIS bronze medalist, this result was a personal best for Cornell and ranks him second on the All-time Gryphon list behind former CIS Champion Greg Baril-Kenny, whose meet record Cornell equaled.
Overall Guelph had a number of first place finishes at the event. Nigel Wray earned two first place finishes in the men’s 1500 with a time 4:12.00 and the 3000m with a time of 8:35.29. Matt MacDonald also earned a first place finish in the men’s 800m with a time of 2:00.53.
In the women’s event Lydia Frost finished first in the women’s 1500m race with a time of 4:42.21; Barry Tomezel finished atop the women’s 60m hurdles and Shaneista Haye grabbed first in the high jump event with a jump of 1.66m.
