The Guelph Gryphons were looking to get some revenge Thursday night (Dec.3) against Brock as the Badgers dealt them a heartbreaking shootout loss on their last trip to Guelph. The Gryphons handled the Badgers 10-2 tonight (Dec. 3) at the Gryphon Centre, with seven different Gryphons scoring goals and fifteen Gryphons picking up at least one point.

Guelph was an offensive force on Thursday night with Erin Small (Pickering, Ont.) picking up a hat-trick (two of those goals coming in the final frame), Rose Harris (Colbourne, Ont.) chipping in two goals, Jody Hodgins (Stayner, Ont.) tallying three assists, and Tayne Hewer (Barrie, Ont.) grabbed both a goal and an assist.

Chelsey Roy (Bathurst, N.B.) started in net for the Gryphons and, other than two unfortunate situations that would plague her stats for the night, played an excellent game, staying cool and collected throughout making 12 saves on 14 shots.

The win adds to Guelph’s improving record (8-4-2), while the Badgers now have dropped six straight leaving them at 4-10-2.

Guelph got the scoring started roughly seven minutes into the period and wouldn’t stop, taking a healthy four-goal lead in the first twenty minutes.

Guelph ’s second goal was up for discussion amongst the refs as it crossed the line while the net was being forced off its pegs. After a brief deliberation, the referee signaled to the back of the net and Hewer was awarded the goal.

While shorthanded, Erin Small played the puck off the boards to herself and was sprung on the breakaway. As Small approached the net she was tangled up by a Brock defender and was unable to get a good shot on net, but the play would not finish there. Small picked up her own rebound, turned and fired the puck on net and although it seemed the Brock netminder had trapped it between her arm and side, the puck had actually trickled through her arm-pit into the back of the net, giving the Gryphons their third goal.

The Gryphons would add one more before the end of the period as Leslie Taylor (Mindemoya, Ont.) made a smart play from her stomach that would ultimately set up the Samantha Ryder (Vancouver, B.C.) goal. The Gryphons would go into the first intermission up 4-0.

The first half of the second period was more evenly matched. Brock would get on the board midway through the period as Badger shot from the point deflected off a Gryphon leg and into the net, upsetting Roy’s shutout through half the game.

It was apparent that this unfortunate event sparked the Gryphon offence as they scored three unanswered goals in the remaining half of the frame.

Rose Harris would grab two of three, including a beautiful shot that snuck in just under the crossbar in the top corner while the other came on a shot along the ice from the corner as Harris was being taken down. Kandace Charbonneau (Guelph, Ont.) would pick up an assist on both goals with Hewer helping out on the first as well.

Tamara Bell (Guelph, Ont.) picked up the third on another beautiful shot nearly identical to Harris’. Hodgins tallied the assist.

Guelph entered the third period up 7-1 but would face another unfortunate event within the first minute, as a dumped puck was headed to the net. Roy, thinking nothing of the harmless shot, moved up to play the puck as she would any other, but the puck took an awkward bounce and hopped up over the glove and pad of Roy and into the net.

Once again the Gryphon offense was fueled by the fluke goal and netted another three unanswered goals to end the game. This time Small would pick up a pair (giving her a hat-trick on the night), the first on a top shelf backhand after a beauty back and forth play between herself and Jenna Lanzarotta (Mississauga, Ont.). The other saw Small on the final stroke of a tremendous tic-tac-toe effort from Hodgins and Zerafa (Mississauga, Ont.).

Kim Wong (Mississauga, Ont.) picked up her first goal (powerplay) as a Gryphon on a long shot along the ice form the point. The puck worked its way through the feet of a number of skaters until the fans erupted as they witnessed the puck whip across the goal line behind the Badger goalie.

The game would get a little rough as the minutes wound down, but the final result would remain 10-2.

The Gryphons will be back at it in the New Year as we wait to see them face the UOIT Ridgebacks at home on January 7.
