MEN'S HOCKEY - Late surge by Lions not enough to overcome Gryphon lead, as Guelph walks away with 7-5 win over York
- February 6, 2010
The Gryphon men’s hockey team wrapped up their five-game home-stretch on a high note tonight, taking the 7-5 win over the York Lions.
The Gryphon men’s hockey team wrapped up their five-game home-stretch on a high note tonight, taking the 7-5 win over the York Lions. After putting away six goals in the first two periods, the Gryhons were brought back to reality as the Lions brought the game within reach after scoring four goals in the final period. The Gryphons were able to hold off the Lions though and walked away with their fourth-straight win.
Among the offensive powerhouse that was the Gryphons tonight, some players that stood out for Guelph included Tim Priamo (Guelph, Ont.), Kris Belan (Florence, Ont.), and Alex Magera (Edmonton, Alta.), who each contributed a goal and an assist, while Nathan Martine (Port Colbourne, Ont.) chipped in two assists of his own.
Scott Van Bommel (Norwich, Ont.) continues to showcase his stability in the role of starting goaltender for the Gryphons, picking up his fifth win in six games, after stopping 20 of York’s shots.
Four-straight wins, brings the Gryphons record to 13-10-4, while the York lions drop to 11-12-3.
The Guelph offense went to work in the first period, netting three goals and forcing a York goalie change sixteen minutes into the frame.
Ed Gale (Keswick, Ont.) started the scoring by deking his way through a couple of York defenders and snapping the puck top cheese. Jake Lalonde (Sudbury, Ont.) followed with his goal a few minutes later, after Matt Lyall (Richmond Hill, Ont.) slipped him the puck, tucking a nifty little backhander under the Lion goaltender, David Blair, and watched it trickle cross the goal line, putting the Gryphons up 2-0.
Alex Magera picked up the third of the period, blocking a flip pass by a York defender and heading in 1-on-1 with Blair. Magera wasted no time, staring down Blair and quickly popping the puck just under the crossbar, increasing the Gryphon lead to three, and forcing York to change goalies.
The Lions managed to squeeze one past Van Bommel before the end of the frame, as the York special teams netted a powerplay off a shot that snuck in under Van Bommel’s arm.
The Gryphons equaled their offensive performance in the second, putting up another three goals, while the Lions couldn’t beat Van Bommel even once in the period.
Michael Nelson (Startford, Ont.) helped increase the Gryphon lead three minutes in, after J.T. MacDonald (Niagra Falls, Ont.), fighting for the puck along the end boards, spotted and fed Nelson the puck. Nelson maneuvered around the goalie and dumped the puck behind the new and confused York goaltender, David Davenport.
Just twelve seconds later, Kris Belan would roof another one on York, giving Guelph a 5-1 advantage and Mike Kusy (St. Catherines, Ont.) would add the sixth of the game on a hard wrist-shot from between the faceoff circles.
York made a valiant effort to come back in the third but their four, third-period goals would not be enough the even the margin of difference. The Gryphons added one more, empty-net goal, catching Davenport making his way to the bench, and leaving Guelph with the 7-5 victory.
The Gryphons finish off their regular season at York next week, where they hope to put another tally in the win column, as they go head-to–head with the Lions at 7:00pm on Saturday (Feb. 13).
