All of our courses meet the National Standards for Certification and as such upon completion can be included on job application resumes. AQUAFIT CERTIFICATION - CALA
The University of Guelph is fortunate to be working very closely with the Canadian Aquafit Leaders Alliance (CALA) in certifying Aquafit leaders. We offer this comprehen­sive course in conjunction with an apprenticeship program in our facility. The theory course is a 40 hour course involving all you need to know to become an instructor. There is a practical component to the certification followed by an assessment. This is a highly recognized certification across Canada and throughout various parts of the world. GROUP FITNESS INSTRUCTOR
Become a group fitness instructor & help people achieve their goals in a fun & motivating group setting.  This 32 hour course linked with CanFitPro National Certification Program will be split into 2 days of theory & 2 days of in-class practical training.  This course offers extensive theory information and good practical application of that theory.  Competency is determined in 2 stages; NFLAC standards written exam and practical assessment.   This is a two weekend course.

PERSONAL TRAINER CERTIFICATION
This applied comprehensive 32 hour course is designed to give you the knowledge, skills & confidence to work with clients in a one on one or small group setting. We are linked to the CanFitPro national certification program.   Course content includes physiology, anatomy, applied kinesiology, energy metabolism, movement mechanics, principles of conditioning, postural assessment & correction, health screening & goal setting, special populations & conditions, injuries, adherence & motivation & the business of personal training.  Program design options & guidelines for cardiovascular, resistance training, flexibility training & weight management will also be discussed.  Included is a follow up apprenticeship program designed to assist in developing your hands on practical experience & skills.  Competency is assessed in 2 stages: a practical assessment & written exam will take place Nov. 25/09 at 5pm.  Class size: Min. 6, Max. 20.  This is a 4 day course.

SPINNING INSTRUCTOR CERTIFICATION
The University of Guelph has developed its own Spinning Certification course highlighting aerobic and anaerobic training for this results driven workout.  The principles of conditioning will be applied by incorporating details around set-up, class format, applied anatomy and kinesiology   Learn the dos & don'ts, precautions of spinning and the basics to coaching participants through this type of workout  .  Certification includes a take home exam as well as a practical evaluation.

$125 member, $150 non-member

WEIGHT TRAINING SUPERVISOR'S COURSE
This comprehensive 16 hour course will educate and prepare you to be a weight room supervisor or enhance your own personal interest in the fitness realm.  Topics covered include: anatomy, physiology specific to weight training, basic cardiovascular, flexibility plus strength training theory & guidelines, principles of conditioning, equipment & exercise analysis, technique correction, spotting techniques, typical roles and responsibilities of a weight room supervisor.  This course concentrates on developing your practical teaching skills for exercise instruction.  Competency is assessed by a written exam that will take place Sept. 30/09 at 5pm.  This course is strongly recommended as a prerequisite for our Personal Training Certification Course.  Class size: Min. 6, Max. 20.  This is a two day course.

AED (AUTOMATIC EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATION
No membership required.  You will learn to use an AED in the appropriate emergency.  Supporting knowledge in the basic anatomy and physiology of the heart as well as the history and legal issues about defibrillation will be covered.  The operation and maintenance of an AED will also be addressed.  The greatest portion of the course will be directed at scenario practice sessions for all types of cardiac arrest.  Class size: Min. 4, Max. 16.  Includes 1 class.

CPR 'C' BASIC RESCUER COURSE & RECERT
No Membership required.  This single 4 hour course is designed for both first time candidates as well as those in need of a recertification.. The program includes such topics as the definition of a sudden death/heart attack, recognition of signs & symptoms, prevention and an action plan.  Demonstration & practice of specific skills include 1 & 2-rescuer Adult, Child & Infant CPR as well as management of choking both conscious & unconscious.  Class size: Min. 8, Max. 16.  Includes 1 class.

EMERGENCY FIRST AID WITH CPR B (LSS)
No Membership required.  This course is designed for individuals wanting to be certified in First aid principles and the emergency treatment of injuries. Skills include; victim assessment, rescue breathing, CPR, choking, and what to do for external bleeding, heart attack, and stroke victims.  Class size: Min. 6, Max. 18.  Includes 1 class.

FIRST AID (ST. JOHN)
No Membership required.  The Standard First Aid Course offered by St.John Ambulance includes C.P.R.Level 'C'.  The content trains the person to be able to administer first aid appropriately for trauma involving wounds & bleeding, shock, injuries to bones, muscles, ligaments & joints, injuries to head, neck & spine, poisoning, burns & scalds, breathing, choking & unconsciousness.   A St.John instructor teaches the course.  Fees include textbook & materials.  A successful test is required for a Standard First Aid Certification.  Late Registration must be approved by the Program Coordinator (519-824-4120 Ext.52220).  Class size: Min. 12, Max. 36.  Includes 3 days.

FIRST AID RECERTIFICATION
No Membership required.  The Standard First Aid recertification offered by St. John Ambulance is for those already certified in Standard First Aid with CPR ‘C’.  Annual retraining in CPR is recommended and Standard First Aid should be recertified every two years.  Class size: Min. 12, Max. 22.  Includes 1 class.

GPS ORIENTEERING
No Membership required.  Learn how to navigate using GPS systems. This course will appeal to outdoor enthusiasts, geo-cache/amazing race types, teachers, camp staff, search and rescue professionals who work in the wilderness. Topics include selection of hand-held GPS Units, marking waypoints, go-tos, coordinates and positioning, map & compass bearings. Includes a field practical at the Hilton Falls Conservation Area.  Late Registration must be approved by the Program Coordinator (519-824-4120 Ext.52220).  Class size:  Minimum 6,  Maximum 25.   Includes 3 classes.

WILDERNESS SURVIVAL
No Membership required.  Learn how to survive in the wilderness ... this course is a must for anyone who ventures into the great outdoors; i.e. hikers, skiers, canoeists & outdoor leaders. Topics include trip planning, map & compass, G.P.S., survival & safety kits, outdoor clothing/footwear, gear & what to do skills (survival game plan) if you become lost: shelters, fire building, signalling, safe use of water, food procurement & basics of search & rescue. The program culminates with a survival simulation weekend outing to a crown land preserve. Late Registration must be approved by the Program Coordinator (519-824-4120 Ext.52220).  Class size:  Minimum 5,  Maximum 25.   Includes 5 classes.

Registration for this course takes place in the Fall Session Only.

YOGA TEACHING CERTIFICATION
Registration avail in Fall Session Only.  This 200 hour certification course is designed for those who want to learn and teach Yoga.  The curriculum presents an intensive study of Classical Yoga, its philosophy and asanas (postures).   Please note that the schedule below outlines 196 hours of class time; 4 hours of specific course time will be allocated outside of the classroom by the instructor.  (Approved by Yoga Alliance www.yogaalliance.com).  Prior yoga experience is not required.  Class size:  Min. 10, Max. 30.

Yoga teacher training encompasses:
•    1:1 mentoring
•    Inner workings of Yoga postures
•    Understanding of mind
•    The Art of  Teaching

This course will include training in:
•    Yoga postures (asanas)
•    Breathing (pranayamas) 
•    History of yoga
•    Hatha yoga asanas: background, benefits, limitations, attitudes, asana       techniques, assessment, analysis, sequencing, safety, practice, review
•    Art of breathing (Pranayamas): practice and examination; breathing rhythm
•    Coordination of asanas and breathing through practice, relationship, mindfulness and breath
•    Anatomy and Physiology: body systems including skeleton, respiratory, muscular system, the importance of the spine
•    Gaining body awareness and muscles awareness
•    Yoga Hygiene (Kriyas)
•    Teaching Methodology: qualities of a teacher, principles of instruction, demonstration, evaluation, observation, assistance, correction, practice teaching, teaching styles, specialization
Yoga Study/Philosophy will include:
•    Yoga philosophy (Samkhya philosophy),
•    Patanjali yoga sutras and its practical applications, causes of afflictions (Kleshas), Understanding Karma Yoga and Kriya Yoga,
•    Eight fold path of Yoga
•    Study of yoga from the Bhagavad Geeta
•    The 4 classical Yogas: Raja yoga (Classical yoga), Karma yoga (yoga of action), Jnana yoga (yoga of knowledge), Bhakti yoga (yoga of devotion)
•    Temperaments (Gunas)
•    Meditation, Chanting, Mantras
•    Other traditional techniques: Recreation, Reflection, Relaxation, Attitudes (Bhavas), Communication
•    Qualities of a teacher in the yoga tradition as well as student teacher relationships and the art of Learning
•    Ethics, lifestyles, routines and integrating yoga into life
•    Thought sharing
•    Yogic diet
•    Setting up a yoga studio

Yoga is an experiential science. You must be able to attend an absolute minimum of 180 hours of in-class instruction; there will be no make up classes.  You should schedule an additional 4-5 hours per week for yoga practice, reading and assignments.
Your Instructor:  Jiwan Goyal (B.S., UC Davis, California; MSc. University of Guelph) Jiwan obtained his teachers training certificate from the oldest organized yoga institute in the world - The Yoga Institute Santacruz in Mumbai, India (www.yogainstitute.org). Jiwan has been practicing and living yoga for more than 25 years and is the Dean of the Institute of Classical Yoga and Therapy (www.clasicalyogaandtherapy.com).
